Elizabeth Yakowa

Born in Kwoi, Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State in 1953 to the family of Mallam Dauda Haruna and Mallama Shetu Dauda. The sixth of seven siblings, Dame Amina Elizabeth started her primary Education in Mallam Maude Primary School in Kwoi, but the quest for quality education saw her move to Kaltungo in Gombe State where she completed her primary education in 1966. Her admiration for the noble teaching profession saw her in 1968 gain admission into Kagoro Teachers’ College in Kaduna State and completed in 1972 with a Grade II certificate.

Background

Dame Yakowa was a grade II teacher between 1973 to 1976. Not satisfied with her level of education and qualification, she proceeded to the Federal Advance Teachers College Yola and competed in 1978 with a National Education Certificate (NCE). An advocate for knowledge, Dame Yakowa worked with Kaduna State as an NCE teacher between 1978 to 1980 before she proceeded to the famous Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and Graduated with a B.A. (Hons) History in 1983. Dame Yakowa worked with the Kaduna State government and rose to the level of an Assistant Director. She left Kaduna State service in 1998 to join the Federal Service and worked in the Ministry of Defence between 1999 to 2011 when she retired as a Deputy Director. Dame Amina joined her husband in Kaduna when he became Deputy governor and Governor of Kaduna State respectively. A devoted catholic and peace advocate, her marriage with Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa in 1978 is blessed with four children. Dame Amina loves travelling, writing, singing and reading.
